Ghana's government has cleared all outstanding arrears owed to the contractor of the critical Ofankor-Nsawam road project and has set a new completion date of June 2026, according to a statement from the presidency. The move is aimed at expediting the completion of the stalled 33.4-kilometer project, a key section of the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The project, which began in July 2022, was originally slated for completion in July 2024 but was halted due to mounting debt. The contractor, Maripoma Enterprise Limited, is now expected to resume work in full force following the payment of all arrears for work done before 2025. The government has also reassigned the project as part of its "Big Push initiative" to prioritize and complete key infrastructure projects across the country.
At a recent inspection of the project, President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the economic importance of the Ofankor-Nsawam road and urged the contractor to ensure the use of quality materials and to work at an accelerated pace to meet the new deadline. The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, confirmed that the government had fulfilled its financial obligations to the contractor, paving the way for the project's resumption.
The Ofankor-Nsawam road is a vital artery for trade and transportation in Ghana, connecting the capital city of Accra to the resource-rich Ashanti region and beyond. Its completion is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and boost economic activity along the corridor. The new 2026 deadline will be closely watched by commuters and businesses who have been eagerly awaiting the project's completion.
