The Governing Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has appointed Professor Christian Agyare as the university's 13th Vice-Chancellor, effective 1st August 2026.
The decision was made at the Council's 292nd Special Meeting held on Wednesday, 13th May 2026. Professor Agyare will serve a four-year term running from 1st August 2026 to 31st July 2030.
He succeeds Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure concludes on 31st July 2026. KNUST was established on 6th October 1951.
Professor Agyare currently serves as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, the university's largest academic college. A Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, he holds a Bachelor and Master of Pharmacy from KNUST and a Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Münster, Germany. He also completed postdoctoral appointments at Novartis/Seeding Labs in Boston and the University of California, San Francisco.
He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, holds an H-index of 36, an i10-index of 84 and has recorded more than 5,000 citations. He is ranked among the top 100 researchers in Ghana in the AD Scientific Index 2026. He has attracted more than USD 11 million in competitive research funding from bodies including the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Mastercard Foundation and the World Bank.
As Head of KNUST's Quality Assurance and Planning Unit from 2016 to 2020, Professor Agyare coordinated the university's first five-year cyclical accreditation review and facilitated the development of 33 out of KNUST's 45 institutional policies.
As College Provost since August 2020, he oversaw the introduction of 16 postgraduate and eight undergraduate programmes.
Professor Agyare is married to Dr. (Pharm.) Charlotte Sena Agyare and they have three children. He also an alumnus of Prempeh College.
