The Bank of Ghana recently gave the public a look at the process in a video titled 'Ghana Cedi Banknote Manufacturing Process,' shared on its official platforms around August 30, 2026. The video, which can be seen below, explains that producing a banknote is far more complicated than simply printing an attractive design on a sheet of paper.
From the special cotton-based paper to microscopic security features and machines that inspect individual serial numbers, almost every part of a cedi banknote is designed to make it difficult to copy and easy to authenticate.
Here is how the process works.
It starts with the design, and can take about a year
Before a single banknote is printed, there is a lengthy design process. According to the Bank of Ghana's video, creating a banknote series involves visual design, selecting security features, customising them and integrating them into the final note. The design stage can take about a year on average.That means the appearance of a banknote is only part of the equation. Designers also have to consider how the note will be checked by members of the public, banks and banknote-processing machines.
Ghana's banknotes combine familiar national imagery with features intended to improve security and machine readability. The Bank of Ghana says the notes feature portraits of the country's independence-era “Big Six”, while other official material highlights features such as watermarks, security threads, tactile marks and optically variable elements.
Cedi notes are not made from ordinary paper
One of the most interesting parts of the manufacturing process is the paper itself. The Bank of Ghana's video says Ghanaian banknotes are printed on special currency paper made from 100% cotton fibres, sourced largely from textile mills.These are cotton fibres that are too short to be spun into normal fabric. Instead of being discarded, they can be used in the production of currency paper. The paper is supplied in reams of 500 sheets and is described in the video as tree-free. It is also compostable at the end of its useful life.
But the paper does much more than simply provide a surface for printing. It is itself part of the banknote's security system.
Security features are built into the paper
Before the colourful designs are even printed, the paper contains security features that help distinguish genuine notes from counterfeits. The Bank of Ghana's video describes optically variable threads woven into the paper, invisible ultraviolet security fibres, watermarks and embedded security threads that can be seen when the note is held against light.These features are important because they allow a genuine note to be checked in different ways rather than relying on its appearance alone.
This is consistent with the Bank of Ghana's public guidance on counterfeit detection, which encourages people to examine their notes and check their security features rather than relying on printed reproductions or appearance alone.
The first printing stage adds an iridescent effect
Once the special paper is ready, the printing process begins. The video describes five stages of processing.The first uses a screen-printing press to apply iridescent ink to the reverse side of the sheets. This produces the familiar gold-like effect containing images resembling gold bars. The effect becomes more noticeable as the banknote is viewed from different angles. You may have seen this feature countless times without realising that it is one of several specially engineered security elements.
Offset printing creates the detailed background
The next major stage is offset printing. The Bank of Ghana says the process uses more than 24 unique colours. That complexity makes it significantly harder for counterfeiters using ordinary commercial printing equipment to reproduce the notes accurately.The detailed designs draw on Ghana's nature and culture, while also incorporating background colours and security patterns. Offset printing is also used for microtext, extremely small text that may only become legible when viewed with magnification.
Another important feature created at this stage is the see-through design. When a genuine note is held up to a light source, elements printed on the front and back line up precisely to create a complete image. According to the video, the two sides have to register to within one-tenth of a millimetre.
That is an extraordinary level of precision for something most people simply fold and put in their pockets.
The GH¢100 and GH¢200 have a microscopic feature you can barely imagine
The higher-denomination notes have another sophisticated security feature. The GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes use an advanced 3D micro-optic stripe rather than a conventional windowed security thread.The stripe creates movement and three-dimensional effects when the note is tilted. The Bank of Ghana's video explains that the effect is produced using more than one million microlenses. These microscopic lenses are so small that they can only be seen with a microscope.
That means the moving visual effect you see on the note is not simply a clever piece of graphic design. It is the result of microscopic optical engineering.
Intaglio printing gives the cedi its distinctive feel
This is the stage many people can recognise without seeing it. Run your fingers over a genuine cedi note, particularly around the portrait, edges and denomination figures, and you can feel raised areas of ink.That texture comes from intaglio printing, a specialised printing technique used extensively for banknotes. In this process, the image is engraved into a metal plate. Ink is placed into the engraved recesses, while excess ink is removed from the surface.
The paper is then pressed against the plate with enormous pressure. The pressure forces the paper into the engraved areas and transfers a thick layer of ink onto it, creating raised images that can be felt with the fingertips.
This is what gives genuine banknotes their characteristic textured feel, something that also helps the public identify them. The Bank of Ghana says tactile geometric symbols are also incorporated to help people with visual impairments distinguish between denominations.
Some features only appear under special conditions
The printing process does not stop with what you can see with the naked eye. The Bank of Ghana says offset printing is also used to produce special effects that can only be seen under ultraviolet light.The final printing stage adds a UV phosphorescent image that can be read by banknote-processing equipment and detected during inspection under UV light.
This is one reason counterfeit detection is not simply a matter of comparing the colour or appearance of a suspicious note with an ordinary printed image.
Every note gets its own identity
Another crucial step involves the banknote's serial number. The final printing stage applies serial numbers using magnetic and fluorescent inks. This transforms each banknote from one of many identical-looking pieces of paper into an individually identifiable product.The manufacturing equipment also uses dedicated quality-inspection cameras to read the serial numbers on the notes. In other words, the machine does not simply print the numbers and move on. It checks them.
A protective coating helps the notes last longer
After the security features and other printing stages are completed, the notes receive another important treatment. A protective varnish is applied to both the front and back of the banknotes.Its purpose is simple: to increase the lifespan of the notes. That matters because cedi banknotes are handled repeatedly. They are folded, passed from person to person, stored in wallets and cash drawers, and exposed to dirt and moisture.
A banknote therefore has to be designed not only to resist counterfeiting but also to survive everyday circulation.
Then the sheets are cut into individual notes
At this point, the banknotes have still not been separated into individual pieces. The printed sheets move to the finishing stage, where specialised equipment precisely cuts them into individual banknotes.The notes are then arranged into stacks of 100 sequentially numbered banknotes before they are banded. This is one of the final stages before the finished currency can move into the broader cash-distribution system.
The banknotes are inspected more than once
Quality control runs throughout the manufacturing process. The Bank of Ghana's video says all processed banknotes are 100% camera inspected during printing.Additional checks are then performed by specialised inspectors during the finishing stage. That layered inspection is important because a banknote is not considered finished simply because the artwork looks correct.
The serial numbers, printing alignment, security features, cutting and other characteristics all have to meet the required specifications.
Why making a cedi note is so complicated
At first glance, a banknote can look like a simple piece of paper with a portrait, colours and a denomination printed on it. It is actually a highly engineered security product.A genuine cedi combines specialised cotton-based paper, embedded security elements, multiple printing techniques, microscopic optical technology, tactile features, UV characteristics, machine-readable inks, serial numbering, protective coatings and several layers of inspection.
The goal is to make the note easy enough for an ordinary person to recognise, while making it extremely difficult for a counterfeiter to reproduce convincingly.
And that explains something many people may not have considered before: the physical cedi in your wallet is not merely “printed money”. It is the finished product of a carefully controlled manufacturing process involving design, materials science, printing technology, optics, security engineering and quality control.
What this means for you
The next time you hold a GH¢20, GH¢100 or any other cedi note, take a closer look. The portrait, raised texture, tiny text, shimmering elements and serial numbers are not simply decorative details. They are part of a carefully engineered system designed to make Ghana's currency durable, recognisable and difficult to counterfeit.Understanding these features also gives you a simple way to play your part. The Bank of Ghana encourages the public to familiarise themselves with the security features of the cedi and check suspicious notes rather than judging them by appearance alone.
What looks like an ordinary piece of paper in your wallet is, in fact, the result of a remarkably complex manufacturing process.
