Speaking at a state funeral at Independence Square, Mahama said the promotions were the "highest mark of respect for duty performed even unto death," and a fitting tribute to officers who served their country with dedication.
The helicopter crashed on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 in the Adansi Akrofuom District while en route to an event in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala was promoted to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah to Flight Sergeant.
"These are not merely symbolic gestures but represent the rightful place these officers have earned in the Republic’s role of honour," Mahama stated, confirming that financial benefits for their families would be adjusted to reflect the new ranks.
The civilian victims, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, will be posthumously recognized at the next National Honours Ceremony.
The tragedy prompted an outpouring of support from across Africa. President Mahama expressed gratitude for the international solidarity, acknowledging heads of state who visited, called, or sent messages of condolence.
"This affirms the strength of Ghana’s national and international relationships, showing how tragedy can bring communities and nations together," he said.
The President also thanked the bereaved families for their courage, and praised the Ghana Armed Forces and emergency services for their swift response to the accident.
