The app, available at no cost to all Gemini users running macOS version 15 or higher, can be summoned from anywhere on the desktop using the keyboard shortcut Option + Space. It is accessible to users aged 13 and above and is available globally effective immediately.
A key feature of the new application is screen sharing, which allows users to share any open window, including local files, with Gemini to receive contextual assistance. The company cited examples such as requesting a summary of a complex chart or asking for spreadsheet formulas while remaining within an active workflow.
The app also supports inline content generation, enabling users to create images using Nano Banana and videos using Veo directly from the interface without interrupting their work.
Michael Friedman, Group Product Manager for the Gemini App, described the release as "just the beginning," indicating that additional features for a more proactive and personalised desktop assistant are planned for the coming months.
The application can be downloaded at gemini.google/mac.
