The new season follows the central character, Aang, played by Gordon Cormier, who must master earthbending to end the war against Fire Lord Ozai, portrayed by Daniel Dae Kim. As Aang and his companions journey into the Earth Kingdom, the narrative will navigate a battlefield of political conflicts, secrets, and hidden alliances.
The storyline will introduce the fictional city of Ba Sing Se, which was constructed as an expansive outdoor practical set under the direction of production designer Michael Wylie. Executive producer and writer Christine Boylan stated that the expanded physical production scale reflects the maturation of the series from its first season.
Season 2 will also introduce Toph Beifong, a blind earthbending master. Actor Miya Cech was selected for the role from a pool of 6,000 applicants. According to Cormier, the training dynamic between Aang and Toph features an argumentative and "rocky" relationship.
Netflix also confirmed that production has already concluded for the show's third and final season, with Boylan teasing a darker thematic direction for the final chapter of the trilogy.
