Nikola Vlasic scored a late header to lift Croatia to a 2-1 victory over Ghana on Saturday, securing their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The win ensures Zlatko Dalic's side finishes second in Group L with six points, just behind group winners England. Ghana, despite the defeat, also progresses to the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, having accumulated four points.
Croatia took the lead in the 31st minute when 22-year-old midfielder Petar Sucic unleashed a powerful low strike from 30 yards out, beating Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. The goal marked Sucic's second international goal for his country.
Ghana intensified pressure in the second half and found an equalizer in the 73rd minute. Defender Derrick Luckassen volleyed home a free-kick delivered by Ernest Nuamah. The goal was awarded following a four-minute video assistant referee (VAR) review for a potential offside.
Croatia reclaimed the lead in the 83rd minute when veteran midfielder Luka Modric delivered a precise corner kick, allowing Vlasic to slip past his marker and head the ball inside the left post.
England won Group L after defeating Panama 2-0 in the group's concurrent match, while Panama finished bottom with zero points.
