The international fixture offered head coach Carlos Queiroz a vital opportunity to assess his squad, having spent just one week with the team ahead of their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Following a scoreless first half, Ghana opened the scoring in the 66th minute through substitute Caleb Yirenkyi. Introduced in the 60th minute, Yirenkyi took just six minutes to make an impact, calmly tapping in from close range.
The breakthrough was created by Olympique Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah, who proved to be a standout performer after coming on in the second half. Nuamah was electric on the right flank, repeatedly troubling the Welsh defense.
Ghana’s starting eleven featured goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi behind a backline of Gideon Mensah, Marvin Senaya, Jerome Opoku, and Jonas Adjetey. Thomas Partey and Elisha Owusu formed the midfield anchor, supported by wingers Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Kamaldeen Sulemana, with Jordan Ayew and Prince Kwabena Adu leading the forward line.
Coach Queiroz utilized his bench heavily in the second half to refresh the side. Structural changes saw Brandon Thomas-Asante, Alidu Seidu, Kwasi Sibo, and Benjamin Asare enter the match.
Later, Abdul Mumin, Inaki Williams, Christopher Bonsu Baah, and Baba Rahman were introduced as Ghana sustained a counter-attacking threat.
Despite maintaining offensive pressure through the pace of Nuamah and Bonsu Baah on the wings, Ghana’s defense was unpicked deep into injury time when Koumas converted a header to secure a draw for the hosts.
The Black Stars will quickly pivot from the Cardiff draw to focus on their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026.
Ghana has been drawn into Group L for the tournament's group stage, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars are set to open their World Cup tournament on June 17 against Panama, before playing their remaining group fixtures against England and Croatia.
