ACCRA, Sept 15 (muzicgh.com) — Ghana has renewed its partnership with international charity Mercy Ships, with President John Dramani Mahama announcing on Sept. 11 that the Global Mercy hospital vessel will return in August 2026 to deliver free specialised surgeries and clinical training at the Port of Tema.
The agreement was confirmed after a high-level meeting at the Presidency between Mahama and members of the Mercy Ships board. The ship will operate as a “floating surgical hospital,” providing free life-changing operations while also running training and mentorship programs for Ghanaian surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses and other health workers, the Presidency said.
“This partnership is a strategic intervention that will significantly complement our government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen surgical care delivery across the country,” Mahama said. He added that “health is not a luxury, it is the foundation of freedom and the currency of our dignity.”
Dame Ann Gloag led the Mercy Ships delegation. Also present were Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, MP, and Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
The 2026 field service will be Mercy Ships’ fifth deployment to Ghana since 1991. Previous visits have facilitated over 2,600 surgeries, 16,700 dental procedures, and supported the professional development of 139 Ghanaian health professionals, according to the Presidency.
Mercy Ships currently has the Global Mercy stationed in West Africa and will deploy it to Ghana in mid-2026 for the planned service at Tema.
