In a statement issued by the Office of the Registrar, the University explained that it operates under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080), with oversight from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and Parliament. According to the University, all statutory fees charged to students follow established legal and governance processes, including approval by its governing Council.
UG stressed that AFUF has remained unchanged since the 2023/2024 academic year. However, some adjustments within the current fee structure have drawn public attention. The University clarified that these changes did not originate from management but were proposed by student leadership bodies, specifically the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), following consultations and advocacy on behalf of students.
Following meetings held on January 8, 2026, involving university officials, student leaders, the Deputy Minister for Education and GTEC, several key resolutions were reached. The SRC Development Levy was set at GH₵200, while the Telecel data bundle was confirmed as an optional service that students may choose to opt out of if they wish.
The University also addressed concerns about the 75th Anniversary Levy, explaining that it is not a newly introduced charge. The levy supports the construction of a multipurpose Student Experience Centre, a legacy project launched during the University’s 75th anniversary celebrations in 2023 to improve facilities and services for current and future students.
UG further highlighted measures aimed at easing financial pressure on students, including reducing the required registration payment from 70% to 50% of approved fees. Flexible payment arrangements and scholarships administered through the Student Financial Aid Office are also available to eligible students.
Reaffirming its student-centred philosophy, the University pledged continued transparency, stakeholder engagement and strict adherence to national laws, as it works to balance affordability, academic quality and institutional sustainability as Ghana’s premier public university.
