OpenAI has launched a native integration between ChatGPT and Shazam, the Apple-owned music recognition service, letting users identify songs playing around them without switching apps.
The feature rolled out globally and is accessible on iOS, Android, and the ChatGPT web platform. To activate it, users connect Shazam through ChatGPT's built-in application directory. From there, simple text commands, such as "@Shazam" or "Shazam, what's playing?" instruct the chatbot to tap the device microphone and listen to ambient audio for recognition.
Once a song is detected, ChatGPT returns the track title, artist name, album artwork, and a short audio preview directly inside the conversation. The tool operates independently of the Shazam standalone app, though users who have it installed can automatically sync any ChatGPT-identified tracks to their permanent Shazam library.
Beyond basic recognition, the integration supports conversational follow-ups. After identifying a track, users can immediately instruct ChatGPT to build a playlist around it, extending the feature's utility beyond a simple lookup tool.
