Ghana's Black Starlets were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by Algeria in their Group D opener at the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026, after throwing away a commanding two-goal first-half advantage.
Dream Start Turns Into Nightmare
The Ghanaian side, coached by Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, made the most electrifying start imaginable. Yao Gavi Robinho broke the deadlock just two minutes into the contest, reacting quickest inside the area to put the Black Starlets ahead. The lead was doubled eight minutes later through a moment of individual brilliance. Midfielder Eric Adu Gyamfi, spotting the Algerian goalkeeper off his line, launched an audacious long-range volley from the centre of the pitch that sailed into the net to make it 2-0.
Missed Chances Prove Costly
With Ghana firmly in control and continuing to create chances, Dr. Ogum's side should have extended the margin before half-time. However, wastefulness in front of goal kept Algeria within reach at the break, a failure that would ultimately prove decisive.Algeria Complete Second-Half Comeback
The second half brought a completely different contest. Algeria re-emerged with greater urgency and turned the game around with two goals scored before the 70th minute, stunning a Ghanaian side that had dominated for much of the opening period.Algeria were handed a further opportunity to win the match outright when awarded a penalty, but the effort was struck wide, preserving the draw.
