The move marks the end of the Fitbit brand as a standalone app, more than four years after Google completed its $2.1 billion acquisition of Fitbit in 2021. Users do not need to download anything, the existing Fitbit app will update automatically on the rollout date.
A New Look and Layout
The Google Health app debuts a completely redesigned interface built around four main tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. Each tab is designed to give users a focused view of a specific area of their wellness, with customisable dashboards at the top of the Today and Health tabs for quick access to frequently checked metrics.Google says the app will support syncing and logging of data across activity, fitness, sleep, vitals, and more, with tools to help users spot trends and track progress over time.
Connect Your Favourite Apps and Devices
One of the bigger upgrades in the Google Health app is expanded third-party connectivity. The app works with hundreds of compatible apps and devices through Health Connect, Apple Health, and the Google Health APIs, meaning users can pull in data from services like Peloton and MyFitnessPal and view everything in one place.Google Fit users will also be invited to migrate their data into the Google Health app later in 2026, as Google consolidates its health and fitness offerings under one platform.
Medical Records Sync, But Not Everywhere
The Google Health app introduces the ability to sync medical records directly within the app, allowing users to view lab results, vitals, and medication history, and track how their health data changes over time. However, this feature is currently limited to users in the United States. For users in Ghana and across Africa, this functionality will not be available at launch. Google has not announced a timeline for wider regional availability.
AI Coach Powered by Gemini
The headline new capability is the Google Health Coach, built with Google's Gemini AI. The coach provides personalised workout suggestions, weekly fitness plans, sleep insights, and, for US users with synced medical records, summaries of health data. The Health Coach is accessible across all four tabs of the app, offering timely nudges and recommendations based on a user's personal data. It is available through a Google Health Premium subscription, which is sold separately and required to unlock the full coaching experience.
New Fitbit Air Tracker Also Announced
Alongside the app rebrand, Google also unveiled the Google Fitbit Air, described as its thinnest and lightest fitness tracker to date. The device is designed to be worn around the clock and is built with what Google calls industry-leading sensors. It pairs directly with the Google Health app, and combined with a Premium subscription, unlocks the full Google Health Coach experience.Your Data Stays Private
Google reaffirmed its standing commitment that Fitbit user health and wellness data will not be used for Google Ads. Users retain full control over their data, including the ability to delete it, turn off optional features, and manage how their information is used or shared. What This Means for You
If you currently use the Fitbit app on your Android or iOS device, you will see the app automatically update to Google Health on or after May 19. Your existing data, tracking history, and device connections will carry over, no action is required on your part. The new four-tab layout and expanded data tracking features will be available to all users. The Google Health Coach, however, requires a Premium subscription, and the medical records sync remains US-only for now.
For Ghanaian users, the most immediate changes will be the redesigned interface, better third-party app integration, and access to the AI coach (behind a paywall). The rebrand signals Google's long-term commitment to making health and fitness a core part of its product ecosystem, and for the millions of Android users across Africa, that is worth paying attention to.
