The appointment was made at the Council's 98th Emergency Meeting held on April 13, 2026, at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra, with the new role taking effect from August 1, 2026.
A Merit-Based Selection Process
According to UMaT's official announcement, the appointment followed a rigorous and transparent selection process managed by a Search Committee established by the University Council in accordance with the institution's statutes. The Committee conducted an extensive national and international search, applied clearly defined criteria, and undertook a thorough evaluation of candidates before presenting its report and recommendations to Council. The University Council subsequently approved Professor Kumi-Boateng's appointment in recognition of his distinguished academic record, leadership experience, and demonstrated capacity to advance UMaT's strategic vision.Profile: Who Is Professor Kumi-Boateng?
Professor Kumi-Boateng is currently Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Studies and Professor of Geomatic Engineering in the Department of Geomatic Engineering at UMaT, with nearly two decades of distinguished experience in teaching, research, and institutional service.He has secured, alongside colleagues, consultancies and grants totalling GH¢444,739,882.98 since joining the university in 2007, reflecting his credibility with both industry and government. His research and consultancy areas include Project Management, Environmental Management, Resettlement Action Planning, Cadastral Surveying, Drone Surveys, Socio-economic Impact Assessment, Land Access, Sustainable Community Development, and Urban Mining (E-Waste).
On the international front, Professor Kumi-Boateng serves as External Moderator for the University of Nairobi's Department of Geospatial and Space Technology in Kenya, Visiting Professor at the University of The Gambia, and External Examiner at the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation in the Netherlands.
A Historic Milestone for UMaT
Professor Kumi-Boateng is the first internally trained professor in UMaT's history to reach such a distinction and is the institution's youngest full professor by rank. He completed his BSc in Geomatic Engineering at the then KNUST School of Mines, Tarkwa in 2004, followed by an MSc in Geo-Information Sciences in 2007, and a PhD in Geomatic Engineering in 2012. He was elevated to the rank of Professor in October 2020.Over his 19-year tenure at UMaT, he has held numerous administrative roles including Dean of Planning and Quality Assurance, Dean of Students, Vice Dean of Students, Vice Dean of International Programmes, and Head of three academic departments, in addition to serving on over 200 ad hoc committees.
