England and Ghana face each other in a pivotal Group L encounter at the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, with both teams aiming to secure a place in the knockout stage following opening-match victories.
The fixture at Boston Stadium pitches Thomas Tuchel’s high-scoring England side against a disciplined Ghana team managed by Carlos Queiroz, with the winner taking sole control of the group.
England enter the match on the back of a 4-2 win over Croatia, highlighted by an aggressive attacking display that registered 11 shots on target. A second consecutive victory would mark the fourth time England have won their opening two World Cup matches, replicating feats from 1982, 2006, and 2018.
The match could feature historical milestones for England. Midfielder Jude Bellingham, aged 22, is set to earn his 50th international cap, potentially becoming the youngest player in the men's national team history to achieve the mark. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender John Stones are in line to make their 14th World Cup appearances.
Ghana open their second matchday following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama, secured by a 95th-minute stoppage-time goal from 20-year-old midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.
However, Queiroz faces selection adjustments. First-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi is expected to miss out due to a groin injury sustained against Panama, clearing the way for Benjamin Asare to start between the posts. In a positive development for the Black Stars, veteran midfielder Thomas Partey is fit to return and is anticipated to partner Yirenkyi in central midfield. Forward Jordan Ayew, who at 34 became the oldest Ghanaian to play in a World Cup during the opener, will continue to lead the attack.
This encounter marks the first competitive senior meeting between the two nations. Their only previous matchup was a 1-1 friendly draw at Wembley Stadium in March 2011.
Kickoff is scheduled for 16:00 local time (20:00 UTC / 21:00 BST). See live updates here.
