Digital publishers using Google AdSense might notice some unusual traffic spikes in their dashboards this week, but there is no need to panic. Google has officially changed how it tracks and reports data for Multiplex ad units.
The update, which went live on June 23, 2026, aims to modernize data transparency for grid-style layouts. If you use these ads on your site, here is a quick breakdown of what is changing and what it means for your website’s bottom line.
What is changing?
Multiplex ads are the native ad grids you typically see at the bottom of articles or sidebars, recommending various sponsored links. The Old Way: Google counted the entire grid unit as one single ad request, regardless of how many individual ad slots were inside it.
The New Way: Google will now report every single ad within that grid as its own independent ad request.
How this impacts your dashboard
Because of this tracking shift, your AdSense reports are going to look a bit different. You will want to look out for a noticeable shift in these specific key performance indicators (KPIs):- Ad Requests & Matched Requests: These numbers will see an immediate jump because one grid layout is now triggering multiple reported requests.
- Ad Request CTR: Because the total number of recorded requests is multiplying, your request-based click-through rate percentage will likely look lower on paper, even if users are clicking at the same rate.
- Coverage: Expect your coverage metrics to fluctuate as each individual slot is calculated independently.
