Opoku-Agyemang was welcomed at Kotoka International Airport by a delegation that included President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah. Also present were Alex Segbefia, the Vice President’s Chief of Staff, other senior government officials, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, and members of her family.
The Vice President, who made a brief statement upon her arrival, expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their prayers during her recovery. She also acknowledged the medical professionals at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) and extended her appreciation to President Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim, for their "support, thoughtfulness and care" throughout her medical leave.
Public awareness of Opoku-Agyemang's health began on March 30, when the Presidency issued a statement indicating she had fallen ill following work commitments on Friday, March 28. The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, confirmed her initial treatment at UGMC. A medical assessment at the Ghanaian facility subsequently recommended further care abroad, leading to a three-week medical leave for the Vice President.
Prior to her return, President Mahama had visited Opoku-Agyemang on May 11, which was Mother's Day, as she recuperated from her illness. The President’s visit, disclosed via a Facebook post, indicated that the Vice President was resting and recovering, with expectations of a swift return to her official responsibilities.
Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang assumed the office of Vice President on January 7, 2025, marking a significant milestone as Ghana's first female to hold the position. Her career has been distinguished by substantial contributions to public service and education, including a tenure as Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017. Notably, she also made history as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast. Her return is expected to see her resume her pivotal role in the nation's governance.
