Key agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the National Identification Authority, reported substantial operational successes and the expansion of services through the first half of 2025.
Police Service Cites Major Crime Breakthroughs, Anti-Mining Operations
The Ghana Police Service reported significant strides in its operational capacity and crime-fighting efforts. The service has sustained its intelligence-led operations against illegal mining activities, a persistent environmental and security challenge.In a move to support the government's national productivity goals, a 24-Hour Economy Secretariat has been established at the police headquarters. Officials also noted breakthroughs in eight major criminal cases following high-impact anti-robbery operations.
To improve healthcare access for its personnel and the public, the service commissioned a new police hospital in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region.
Prisons Service Boosts Food Security and Digital Literacy
The Ghana Prisons Service has advanced its self-sufficiency programs, cultivating 1,654 acres of various crops to ensure food security within its correctional facilities. A 5,000-layer poultry project was also initiated to supplement food supplies.In line with national economic policy, the service has drafted a proposal to integrate prison operations into the 24-Hour Economy framework.
Educational initiatives have been a key focus, with the implementation of juvenile and secondary education programs for inmates. Furthermore, a digital literacy program was launched under the "One Million Coders Programme," aiming to equip inmates with valuable tech skills. The service also collaborated with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to recruit additional prison support staff.
National Identification Authority Clears Backlog, Expands Services
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has made significant progress in its registration drive, recording 190,775 new Ghana Card enrolments for citizens and 10,290 for foreign nationals so far this year.The authority successfully cleared a backlog of 600,000 registrations across its 292 operational offices. To enhance service delivery, the NIA has acquired additional premium centres and piloted an online application and booking system at two Accra locations, processing an average of 100 applications daily.
A "Prestige Registration Service" was launched in partnership with SSNIT, Ghana Commercial Bank, and private firms, offering home or office enrolment in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. Premium centre services were also expanded to the Central, Upper East, Upper West, and Northern Regions, contributing to a 2,000-person increase in monthly enrolments.
Immigration and Fire Services Report Increased Enforcement and Safety Measures
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) reported intercepting 291 irregular migrants and rescuing 21 victims of human trafficking. These operations led to the arrest of 223 individuals for various immigration offenses. As of June 2025, 13 suspects involved in human trafficking, illegal entry, and document forgery have been prosecuted. The service also identified 111 fraud cases out of 263 investigated, preventing potential identity theft. In its border security role, the GIS intercepted smuggled goods, including 406 bags of cocoa beans and 1,115 jerry cans of fuel.The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) conducted 14,234 fire safety inspections nationwide, issuing 12,418 fire certificates. The service also trained 5,214 fire volunteers to support community-level safety efforts. Operationally, the GNFS responded to 3,841 fire outbreaks and 851 road traffic collisions.
Other Agencies Detail Progress in Narcotics Control, Disaster Response, and Peacebuilding
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) disrupted major trafficking operations, seizing 192 kilograms of cocaine, 90 kilograms of cannabis, and 17.9 kilograms of gold bars. The commission has secured 15 new district offices and operationalised toll-free lines to encourage citizen tip-offs.The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) responded to 332 emergencies and provided relief to 11,524 disaster victims. The agency desilted 243 drainage channels to mitigate urban flooding and engaged with over 2,100 communities to develop disaster risk reduction plans.
The National Peace Council successfully resolved 429 conflict cases, including 168 chieftaincy disputes and 105 land-related conflicts. It also established new peace committees in conflict-prone areas and inaugurated regional councils in the Ahafo and Savannah Regions.
The Ghana Refugee Board launched a campaign in the Upper West Region to process approximately 7,000 Burkinabe nationals seeking protection. It also registered 1,522 new refugees and asylum seekers and, in collaboration with the UNHCR and GIS, integrated 500 Ivorian refugees by granting them residence permits.
The Gaming Commission of Ghana increased its enforcement activities, shutting down two illegal casinos in Tema and Osu. The commission is working with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to implement the Gaming Administration Monitoring System (GAMS) for real-time revenue tracking and has initiated plans for a gambling rehabilitation centre in the Ashanti Region.
