Ghana’s gospel music fraternity is in mourning following the death of veteran singer Maame Tiwaa, known for her long-standing affiliation with Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo. According to reports by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), she passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025.
Maame Tiwaa, whose given name was Mary Tiwaa, was described as a defining voice in Ghana’s gospel music scene for over three decades. Her warm yet powerful vocals and deep spiritual expression helped shape the distinctive sound of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, making her a beloved figure among worshippers across the country.
She lent her voice to many of the group’s most iconic songs, including “Wo Haw Ne Sen”, “Awurade Ka Me Ho”, “Yen Fa Oye Nkoaa”, and “Mensuro”. Apart from her role as part of the group, Maame Tiwaa also stood out for her solo ministrations, performances often described as soul-lifting and deeply anointed.
Earlier in 2025, she delivered a moving performance at the tribute to Yaw Sarpong during the Telecel Ghana Music Awards 2025, accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the group.
Since the announcement of her passing, tributes have poured in from fans, fellow artists and members of the gospel community, many expressing sorrow at the loss of a voice that brought comfort and inspiration.
At this time, the family has not publicly disclosed details of the cause of death or funeral arrangements.
