The announcement, issued by the ministry's Public Relations Unit, confirms that the Government of Ghana considered it appropriate to return the airport to the name by which it was formerly and internationally known, prior to its previous redesignation. The ministry did not provide a detailed historical account of when or why the name was originally changed, but affirmed that restoring the Accra International Airport designation reflects both historical precedent and international recognition.
Passengers and aviation partners have been assured that the renaming will have no bearing on airport operations, safety standards, or existing international travel arrangements. Crucially, the airport's code within the records of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) remains "ACC," providing continuity for airlines, travel agencies, and booking platforms worldwide.
The transition process, according to the ministry, will be systematic and comprehensive. It will encompass updates to official documentation and statutory instruments, the replacement of airport signage, revisions to digital platforms, and amendments across aviation publications and related communication materials. No timeline for the completion of these updates was specified in the announcement.
The Ministry of Transport has appealed to members of the public, domestic and international stakeholders, and global aviation partners to extend their cooperation to the relevant authorities throughout the transition period, describing a smooth and seamless changeover as a shared responsibility.
The press release was issued under the authority of the Ministry of Transport's Public Relations Unit on behalf of the Republic of Ghana's government.
