First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama opened a new maternity and child health facility in Asukawkaw, Krachi East District, on Saturday, fulfilling a request made by the community's paramount chief a year earlier.
The facility becomes the fourth maternity and children's ward handed over by the Lordina Foundation to Ghanaian communities and the Ghana Health Service. Previous installations serve Bole District Hospital, Nkoranza Health Centre, and Abodom community.
Designed for comprehensive reproductive and neonatal care, the facility houses a fully equipped operating theatre, neonatal intensive care unit, delivery room, and sterilization facilities. Equipment includes ultrasound machines, infant incubators, C-section kits, ECG monitors, and phototherapy units. Solar-hybrid power systems ensure reliable emergency lighting.
The initiative addresses maternal mortality in Ghana, where approximately one in ten women face pregnancy-related death risks. The paramount chief of Akroso-Asukawkaw, Nana Odamu Gyamfi III, requested the project after observing pregnant women traveling excessive distances to reach distant clinics, often too late for emergency care.

The Foundation received donor and partner support for the project. Health Minister Kwabena Akandoh praised the facility as "a practical step towards safe, timely, and dignified care," while Foundation Board Chair Pastor Kwame Boateng Sarpong described it as emblematic of the organization's mission to support rural communities.
