Ghana's Ministry of the Interior has officially declared Wednesday, 27th May 2026, a statutory public holiday in observance of Eid-Ul-Adha, directing the entire country to observe the day as such.
The announcement was signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP) and formally issued on Friday, 15th May 2026, giving Ghanaians approximately twelve days' notice ahead of the holiday.
Eid-Ul-Adha, commonly referred to as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar. Observed by Muslims around the world, it honours the story of Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The festival also marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and is traditionally characterised by congregational prayers, the ritual slaughter of animals, and the distribution of meat to family members, neighbours, and people in need. In Ghana, where Muslims form a substantial portion of the population, particularly across the Northern regions, Eid-Ul-Adha is widely and publicly celebrated.
The declaration applies to all sectors and members of the public nationwide, and was published on the Ministry's official website at mint.gov.gh and shared across its official social media channels.
