The Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has appointed Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto as the university's substantive Vice-Chancellor, with his tenure set to commence on August 1, 2026.
The decision was taken at a Special Meeting of the Governing Council on May 15, 2026, and formally announced through a statement signed by UCC Registrar Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye (Esq.).
Who Is Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto?
Professor Aheto is not a new figure in UCC's leadership structure. He currently holds the roles of Acting Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor, making his elevation to the substantive position a formal confirmation of leadership responsibilities he has already been exercising. He is also a Professor of Coastal Ecology and Interdisciplinary Ocean Studies, and serves as Director of the Centre for Coastal Management, the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), at UCC.Education and Areas of Research
Professor Aheto earned his BSc (Hons) from the University of Cape Coast, followed by an MSc in Tropical Aquatic Ecology and a PhD in Environmental Sciences, both from the University of Bremen in Germany. He additionally holds an MSc in Rural Development from the Swedish Agricultural University.His scholarly output spans coastal and marine ecosystem conservation, small-scale fisheries, marine spatial planning, wetlands ecology, and marine conflict, areas in which he maintains an extensive publication record in internationally indexed journals.
Global Impact and Leadership Beyond the Classroom
With over 15 years of scientific project management experience, Professor Aheto has served as the authorised institutional representative for major donor-funded projects in marine, coastal, and fisheries management at UCC. Funding partners have included the World Bank, the African Union, USAID, and DANIDA, among others.Beyond his work at UCC, he serves on several national and international boards and acts as a technical adviser to the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program of the World Bank. He has received multiple meritorious awards in recognition of his contributions to his field, and is noted for his commitment to fostering international academic partnerships in ocean and coastal studies.
Professor Aheto's appointment positions UCC, widely regarded as Ghana's foremost public university, under the leadership of one of its most accomplished academic and scientific minds.
